POSTION SUMMARY
As part of a dynamic team, the Camp Counselor is responsible for the effective delivery of recreational programming for children ages 6 – 8 years. Day camps are offered July and August.

POSITION REPORTING
Reports to Day Camp Coordinator, YWCA Fitness on 25th

DIRECT REPORTS
None

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Deliver programming with a focus on physical activity and fun:

• Create a warm, safe and enjoyable environment for participants;
• Provide ongoing communication with parents/guardians of participants;
• Use the camp curriculum to provide children opportunities to be physically active and engaged in creative and fun craft projects;
• Act as a role model for participants and volunteers;
• Be flexible and adaptable in a rapidly changing environment;
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

KEY COMPETENCIES

Communication and Interpersonal skills - Fosters open communication and dialogue by sharing information, listening effectively, speaking honestly, and preparing written communications. Explains concepts clearly by understanding audience dynamics and providing concise, understandable messages. Is able to influence and gain support from others internal and external to the association.

Relationship Building: Builds positive interactions both internally and externally to achieve work related goals; gives and gets energy from bringing people together to lead and achieve; works proactively to develop positive relations with participants, peers and volunteers; goes out of his/her way to assist colleagues in achieving their individual and organizational goals.

Teamwork & Cooperation: Brings a personal contribution to the group in order to accomplish the objectives established by the team; is a team player and is cooperative; builds appropriate rapport; uses diplomacy and tact; truly values people; easily gains trust and support of peers; reliable; encourages collaboration.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

• CPR-C and First Aid certification (mandatory)
• Valid Criminal Record Check (mandatory)
• Minimum of one year post-secondary education in one of the following fields of study:
o Environmental Engineering
o Kinesiology
o Education
o Recreation and Leisure
o Early Childhood Development
• Experience working with children and understanding of learning theories desirable

POSTION SUMMARY
As part of a dynamic team, the Camp Coordinator will assume major responsibility for the design, implementation and evaluation of the YWCA summer day camp programs. Day camps are offered for children aged 6 – 8 throughout July and August.

Manager, YWCA Fitness on 25th

DIRECT REPORTS
All camp staff – Approximately 3

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Plan camp programs with a focus on physical activity and fun:
• Research innovative opportunities and approaches to incorporating physical activity and learning opportunities into day camps;
• Create relationships with organizations that could provide components for day camp programs;

2. With assistance from the Manager, plan and implement day camp programs:
• Supervise the day-to-day activities of day camp staff;
• Act as main camp counsellor
• Connect with campers and their parents to monitor their experiences and perceptions;
• Monitor day camp programs and make adjustments as necessary.

3. Wrap up the programs and produce an evaluation document:
• Conduct continuous evaluations throughout the summer with staff and camp participants;
• Conduct exit interviews with camp staff;
• Utilizing the evaluation process developed in #1 above, conduct a thorough evaluation of the day camp programs, including recommendations for improvement;
• Share all information with the Manager to ensure continuity and improvement for next year’s day camp programs.


KEY COMPETENCIES

Program development/community development: Understands and utilizes accepted processes to develop and initiate programs that meet the needs of Fitness on 25th day camps, utilizing and involving resources from internal and external communities as appropriate.

Organizational Skills: Must demonstrate strong organizational skills, with the ability to plan, set priorities and meet timelines consistently.

Team Building: Builds common objectives among all areas through understanding group dynamics and bringing cross-functional teams together to communicate and problem solve concerns and issues.

Community Awareness: Attuned to the community needs with the ability to be proactive and responsive in adapting the YWCA service lines to remain a viable alternative for children’s programming. In particular, understands the environmental sector and how to build relationships.

1:30PM - BRIDGE CITY BOOGIE CORE CLINIC

This clinic is geared for runners, from beginners to veterans, who are interested in improving performance and injury prevention through "core" training. The first half of the clinic will involve a review of the science and role of core training in runners, an introduction to the relevant muscles and their actions while stabilizing the body, as well as training principles and progressions. The second half will be a hands-on session where runner-specific core exercises are demonstrated and practiced.
